Ten Fun Reasons To Go To Bermuda Via The Style Traveller

Where? Bermuda.

Exactly? 1000 miles north of the Caribbean, off the coast of North America just east of North Carolina, the tiny British colony of Bermuda lies in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.

When to go? All year round. Bermuda has a lush sub tropical climate. Temperatures rarely drop below 12 degrees Centigrade in the winter months, making it an ideal all year round destination.

Why? I was incredibly lucky to be invited on a press trip to Bermuda with the Bermuda Tourism Authority. It was five nights staying on the island and sampling some of the fun activities and adventures to be had.

Here’s the style traveller style guide and ten fun reasons to visit Bermuda…

Tobacco Bay Gets Service Certification

Three more local businesses – Fun Golf, Lili Bermuda, and Tobacco Bay/Beach Boys — have successfully demonstrated full adherence to Bermuda’s new National Service Standards, joining seven other businesses officially certified in the National Service Standards Programme.

“This certification was created by the local industry for the local industry for the sector,” said Karla Lacey, Chief Operating Officer, who holds responsibility for the programme. ‘It’s reflective of best practices in the industry globally and something all recipients are proud to have earned.”

The BTA said, “Going forward each of the three businesses will be marked on the gotobermuda.com website with a star, making their certification clear to site visitors.

“Additionally, these businesses are pinned to the top of the list in their respective sectors when a user launches a search on gotobermuda.com. Fun Golf and Tobacco Bay/Beach Boys are in the Recreation and Entertainment Sector. Lili Bermuda is in the Retail and Shopping Sector.

“These latest certifications are milestones for the programme,” said Bermuda Tourism Authority Standards and Training Manager Rasheeda Burgess.

“Fun Golf and Tobacco Bay/Beach Boys are the first businesses to complete the programme in the Recreation and Entertainment Category. And we’re pleased the management at Lili Bermuda has now been through the process twice – initially for staff in St. George at the Bermuda Perfumery and now the team at the Lili Bermuda Boutique in Hamilton have also been certified.

“This tells us Bermudian businesses recognise the value of National Service Standards and understand that superior customer service gives them an edge, while helping to set Bermuda apart from its competitors.”

“We are grateful for having had the opportunity to participate and encourage other local service providers to sign up,” said Belcario Thomas of Beach Boys. “There’s solid value in the NSSP’s process, preparing Bermuda’s tourism industry as an attractive destination to the next generation of guests who seek value for money and local engagement.”

Lili Bermuda Store Manager Marie-France Thompson said: “We are thrilled and honoured to have been recognised by the Bermuda Tourism Authority and the local business leaders.

“This programme allowed us to assess and reinforce our policies and customer service standards. We strongly encourage all organisations dealing with the public to join the programme as it will also motivate your staff – not to mention the benefits of the marketing and the promotional value.”

In order to gain certification participating businesses must demonstrate mastery of five principals of service on a consistent basis and have at least 70 percent of customer-facing staff complete the Certified Tourism Ambassador Programme.

Mystery shoppers visited the businesses more than once to ensure standards were being met and now those businesses can place an NSSP seal of approval in their storefronts and on their websites.

This past summer the following businesses earned their NSSP certification:

27th Century Boutique
Alexandra Mosher Studio Jewellery
The Bermuda Perfumery
Bermuda Transit Services
Chopstix Fusion
Dolphin Quest
Flanagan’s Irish Pub
Businesses that would like to start the process of certification can apply online at service.bm.

‘Bermie-Ricans’ to host fundraiser At Tobacco Bay

A group of “Bermie-Ricans” are to join forces this weekend to support hurricane relief efforts in Puerto Rico.
Diana Cruz-Pitcher said a fundraiser at Tobacco Bay in St George’s on Saturday will offer Puerto Rican food and drink, Latin music and entertainment.
Mrs Cruz-Pitcher said: “We get together periodically to celebrate our Puerto Rican heritage, and following Hurricane Maria we felt the need to do a fundraiser.
“We all have family over there. My parents are in their eighties, and it took two-and-a-half weeks to reach them after the storm. The situation over there is dire, and so we are looking to do whatever we can to help from this far away.”
Hurricane Maria caused devastation when it tore through Puerto Rico in September.
More than a month after the storm, 80 per cent of homes are without electricity and a third of the island has no clean drinking water.
Mrs Cruz-Pitcher said: “Hurricanes are not an unfamiliar event in Puerto Rico, but this one was different.
“When it arrived, it completely devastated our island. To see your childhood memories torn apart like that, to see your family in pain, it’s painful.
“There have been quite a few sleepless nights, quite a few crying nights.”
But Mrs Cruz-Pitcher said she has seen an outpouring of international support.
The fundraiser is scheduled to start at 6pm and continue until 11pm, with a Puerto Rican-style dinner served until 8pm. Dinner will cost $20 per plate, with $5 empanadas and $4 coquito shots — described as a Puerto Rican eggnog.

Entrepreneurs Turn to Tourism

High Interest in Tourism Entrepreneurism

Fifty-two people attended the Bermuda Tourism Authority’s series of workshops designed to help tourism industry ideas get off the ground. That’s the highest number to participate in the workshops since the Tourism Investment Experiences Programme began in 2014.

Entrepreneurs now have until September 29th, 2017 to submit their applications online. The submissions are evaluated against a transparent evaluation process. Those aligned with the overall tourism strategy and show a return on investment receive funds or marketing support from the Bermuda Tourism Authority.

Funding awarded through the programme is withheld until key milestones, such as government approval for a new experience, are met. All awards are subject to reporting requirements and a rigorous evaluation of return on investment.

“Our product and experiences team is working hard to stimulate new ideas and then support those entrepreneurs who come forward with a solid plan,” said Bermuda Tourism Authority Chief Executive Kevin Dallas. “However, good ideas are sometimes stalled or strangled by regulations and red tape. The Bermuda Tourism Authority is working with government and other stakeholders to simplify the process for entrepreneurs and hopefully, as a result, fuel job creation, Bermudian business ownership and enhanced experiences for visitors.”

Applicants who did not attend this year’s workshop are encouraged to review the workshop presentation online before making their submission. The latest in tourism strategy and market research make up a large portion of the presentation.

Beach Boys Ltd — a hospitality & destination experience management company and the operators of Tobacco Bay — announced that it has received a TripAdvisor® Certificate of Excellence.

Beach Boys Ltd CEO Belcario Thomas said, “Installing Bermudian pride and energy in hospitality via attentive service, consistent, quality products and value added experiences is a huge part of what drives our company’s culture!

“So, with that, we’re really excited to have won this award within these past two short summer seasons. We can’t thank our staff and crew that have come through our doors enough, for their commitment, passion and energy in enhancing Bermuda’s tourism experience.

“A collaborative spirit is key and our stakeholders the CoS, W&E, the BTA, suppliers, service providers and neighbors working with us towards a common vision has been critical to efforts.

Mr.Thomas added, “Heading into this 2016 season, we’re really excited about a host of new offerings, not just for guests but targeting residents.

“Over the years we’ve heard from hundreds of residents wishing for alternative means to be able to fully enjoy a weekend day at Tobacco Bay [without drunk driving or taking a costly taxi, basically!]

“So, finally, starting the first weekend in June, an express party-beach bar shuttle will leave Paget, Hamilton & Aquarium 4x a day, which will include one of our new signature cocktails on entry with live local entertainment and daily enter to win giveaways with special promotions.

“Tobacco Bay also welcomes into the season, new, universal access washrooms including showers and change rooms, complimentary wifi to stay connected and new “live art” programming with classes, workshops and performances, free!

“With the Certificate of Excellence, TripAdvisor honours hospitality businesses that have consistently received strong praise and ratings from travellers”, said Heather Leisman, Vice President of Industry Marketing, TripAdvisor.

“This recognition helps travellers identify and book properties that regularly deliver great service. TripAdvisor is proud to play this integral role in helping travellers feel more confident in their booking decisions.”

The Certificate of Excellence accounts for the quality, quantity and recency of reviews submitted by travellers on TripAdvisor over a 12-month period. To qualify, a business must maintain an overall TripAdvisor bubble rating of at least four out of five, have a minimum number of reviews and must have been listed on TripAdvisor for at least 12 months.
